Quotes

Michelle: So I see you lost the tan.
Beard: Yeah, out of respect for Mae. She thought it came off as anti-Brit.
Michelle: And the diamond stud?
Beard: Mae thought it was pretentious.
Michelle: But you kept the dangly earring.
Beard: Oh, Mae liked that. She said it reminded her of the ear tag on her favorite sheep.
Michelle: Oh.
Ted: Wait, Mae had a favorite sheep?
All: Doug!

Rebecca: I hate funerals, but I love the drinks after. The service cracks you open and the booze fills in the gaps.
Higgins: Until it doesn't.

Henry: Are we gonna have to move?
Ted: Yeah, I wish I had these answers for you, big guy, but that's one of them things about life. Sometimes they throw big changes at you in bunches.
Henry: Yeah, I know. I live in London now.

Beard: Jesus, Jane, what are you doing here?
Jane: How can you ask me that? Meg was my best friend.
Beard: If that were true, you would know her name was Mae, and you wouldn't be dressed like a hooker's bridesmaid.

Siobhan and Niamh: (singing "The Parting Glass") Of all the money that e'er I had. I spent it in good company. And all the harm I've ever done. Alas it was to none but me. And all I've done for want of wit. To memory now I can't recall. So fill to me the parting glass. Good night and joy be with you all. Of all the comrades that e'er I had. They're sorry for my going away. And all the sweethearts That e'er I had. They'd wish me one more day to stay. But since it fell unto my lot. That I should rise and you should not. I'll gently rise and softly call. Good night and joy be with you all.
Boots: That's what I'm f**king talking about!

Ted: You know, when we lose someone i-it can really put things into perspective, you know? Can even make all this football stuff seem pretty silly.
Henry: If Mae heard you say that, she'd reach out of her grave and pull you back down with her.
Ted: Yeah, that's why I didn't say it too loud.

Ted: Hey, Coach, when you were growing up, your folks would lie to you, right?
Beard: You kidding? All the time. About Santa Claus, cigarettes, the moon landing, tons of stuff.

Lizzie: Keep your promise 'cause I've asked you to do this...
Ben: I'm not not keeping... Okay, okay, okay, look... I'm not the one that decided to try and be an athlete after having two kids, am I?

Rebecca: There aren't any real bloody shareholders left anymore, thanks to Rupert.
Zelda: Oh, I feel for you. I do. It's like when Roger Waters tried to take Pink Floyd back. And Rupert didn't even write Dark Side of the Moon, did he?

Rebecca: Ah, Keeley. You look serious.
Keeley: Thank you, haven't slept, too inspired.

Gemma: I think drunk Rebecca might be my new spirit animal, you know?
Margy: I am definitely dressing up as her for Halloween this year.
Boots: Okay, fine. I'll go as Higgins then and just stand awkwardly by you all night.

Keeley: I am going to watch from our comfy couch... in my comfy clothes, next to a comfy bin, ready for when our baby turns me into The Exorcist.
Roy: The exorcist is actually the priest... who removes the demon that caused the vomiting.

Nathan: Hey, have your eyes always been blue?
Beard: Yep.

Ted: Alice, this is Nathan Shelley.
Alice: Nice to meet you.
Nathan: Nice to meet you.
Ted: Congratulations. You both just met a cool person.

Nathan: How many people does it take to coach the Polish national football team?
Ted: Oh, I don't know. How many?
Nathan: Three.
Ted: Same as we got here. How about that?

Roy: I f**king hate to say it, but I need some advice.
Ted: Uh, Diamond Dogs mount up.
(howling, barking)

Roy: Look, the Diamond Dogs is just a thing where we talk about the shit that's in our heads and nobody judges, but, for some reason, it has to start with some f**king barking.
Alice: Right, so it's a... it's a guy thing.
Ted: Yeah, I mean, traditionally, yes, but, uh, you're more than welcome to stay. Uh, you could be a cat.
Alice: Dogs can sometimes be female.
Ted: Oh, right, duh. Uh, yeah, okay, be a dog.
Alice: No, no, no. I... I want to be a cat.

Higgins: When Julie and I were expecting our first, my dad advised me, "If you drop your kids, and you will, just pick them up as quick as you can."
Nathan: Yeah. End of the day, love wins, and if you can surrender to the emotion of it, that informs the decisions you make, head catches up with the heart.
Beard: Roy, when I thought I was going to be a dad, I got more excited with each passing day until I finally realized that Jane had been pregnant for 11 months.

Alice: I don't know if I even want kids myself, but, um, don't tell them that green beans taste delicious because they don't, and it will take them years to rebuild that trust again.
Roy: That's a good point.
Alice: And don't disappear when you feel inadequate.

Ted: Well, the Diamond Dogs and the, uh, Kitty Committee? Uh...
Alice: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I want to be called the Cat People.
Beard: Point of order, but that's plural, and there's only one of you.
Alice: For now.
Beard: Fair play.
Ted: Okay, well, the Diamond Dogs and Cat People have spoken!(barking, howling)

Boots: You good?
Lizzie: I'm gonna kick that ball today like it's his f**king dick.
Boots: Yeah, you're good.

Ted: I can only think of one person that ain't gonna be here that I know would want to be here, but assuming they got good Wi-Fi at the pubs up there in Heaven, she gonna be watching y'all. (players chuckle)
Beard: So you better play hard, babies!

Roy: Did you ever second guess leaving Richmond for Man U?
Sam: Yeah, sure. But as Dorothy learned, sometimes you have to go away to know where home truly is.
Roy: I love The Wizard of Oz.
Sam: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Dorothy is my auntie, who left my uncle for a dance instructor for a little while. Big, big scandal in the Obisanya family.

Zelda: Aw, you poor gullible little babies.
Rebecca: Zelda? Why are you here?
Zelda: Because it was me all along. Dun dun dun!
Baz: (gasps) This is bad.
Jeremy: How do you know?
Paul: She said, "Dun dun dun!"

Rebecca: Why would you do this? What happened to women helping women?
Zelda: I am helping a woman. Me!

Zelda: How could you betray me like this? What did they offer you?
Hugo: Absolutely nothing. Zelda, you didn't ask me to go to the Milks. You demanded it. And when you did, you were even meaner to me. We Riddlesses are deeply feeling.

Elaine Pinter: (on a video call) I'm speaking on behalf of a former client of ours. Her name... (pause)
Zelda: Did it freeze?
Elaine Pinter: ...was Mae Green.
Rebecca: (aside) Classic Pinter pause.

Elaine Pinter: (on a video call) Are Mr. Blumenthal, Mr. La Fleur, and Mr. Primrose in attendance?
Baz: Ye-Yes, Miss.
Jeremy: Yes, milady.
Elaine Pinter: You three gentlemen are now the owners and proprietors of the Crown and Anchor pub. Ms. Green's only request in running the business was, and I quote, "Don't f**k it up." And that she loves you.

Elaine Pinter: (watching Baz, Jeremy and Paul celebrate) Are we watching the Looney Tunes?

Elaine Pinter: (on a video call) In regards to Ms. Green's two percent ownership stake in AFC Richmond... She recently amended her will to say, I, Mae Green, ask that my entire holdings of AFC Richmond be given to Rebecca Welton. And anyone trying to take the club away from her can eat my arse. Hmm. A bit salty, but nonetheless legally binding.

Rebecca: I know you love the story of the scorpion and the frog. A lot of people do. But I care for a different one. A woman sees a scorpion drowning in the river, and she tries to help it over and over again and keeps getting stung. And a passerby says, "Why do you keep bothering to help something that hurts you over and over again?" And the woman says, "It's in the scorpion's nature to sting. Just as it's in my nature to save. Why would I change my nature just because of theirs?"

Zelda: I'm hotter for you now than I have ever been before. Right now, you're a naughty boy in big trouble.
Hugo: Well, I hope you punish me severely.

Roy: Chelsea asked me to be their new manager, and I'm gonna say yes.
Rebecca: Go f**k yourself.

Roy: Is there booze in that?
Rebecca: No, bellend. That is why I said I needed a drink.

Roy: Just so you know, they wanted me to start immediately, but I said no, not until the season's over.
Rebecca: Oh, wow! Aw! That's so thoughtful of you. Roy Kent, Employee of the Year! Go get Higgins to give you a f**king plaque!

Roy: We've got to take risks, haven't we, Rebecca? Otherwise, what's the f**king point? I deserve for good things to happen in my life. Don't I?
Rebecca: You're right.
Roy: No. You're right. You're the one who said that.

Rebecca: Do you know how Mae died?
Ted: Well, I, uh?
Rebecca: She died doing what she loved. And the rest of us, we're all still... in it, aren't we? We laugh, we hurt, we fall, we get back up. (sighs) We're a mess. And that is... fantastic. 'Cause... being messy just means... being alive. And we could all do with being a bit more alive. (whispering to herself) So what are you waiting for?

Rebecca: I'd get down on one knee, but, um, it's quite hard to assume that position in a pencil skirt.

Mae: When death comes like the hungry bear in autumn... when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse to buy me, and snaps the purse shut... when death comes like the measle pox... when death comes like an iceberg between the shoulder blades... I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering... what's it gonna be like, that cottage of darkness? And therefore I look upon everything as a brotherhood and a sisterhood, and I look upon time as no more than an idea, and I consider eternity as another possibility... and I think of each life as a flower, as common as a field daisy, and as singular. And each name a comfortable music in the mouth... tending, as all music does... towards silence. When it's over, I want to say... all my life I was a bride married to amazement. That I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms. When it's over, I don't want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular... and real. When it's over... I don't want to find myself sighing. And frightened... or full of argument. I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.

Notes and Trivia

This episode was originally titled "The Departing Lass"

The opening theme was performed by Brandi Carlyle.

When Higgins gets a call from "HR" it should be noted that "HR" can mean "Hugo Riddles", Zelda's henchman.

Niamh and Siobhan lead the wake in the traditional farewell song "The Parting Glass". The song has Scottish roots, but is long associated with Irish wakes... even though Mae wasn't Irish.... but the girls were!

When Ted told Henry the lie that his grandfather died because he fell down some stairs and hit his head, this is how Jason Sudeikis' own grandfather died as was revealed in the genealogy series "Who Do You Think You Are".

Coach Beard greets the returning Nate with their old "headbutt of love," echoing their Season 3 reconciliation.

There is another "Wizard of Oz" nod in this episode when Roy asks if Sam ever second-guesses leaving Richmond for Manchester United, Sam answers, "Sure, but as Dorothy learned, sometimes you have to go away to know where home truly is." He then clarifies he means his Auntie Dorothy, who briefly left his uncle for a dance instructor (big scandal in the Obisanya family).

As Roy packs his office to leave for the Chelsea job, he finds a note from Ted that says "You’re gonna be a great dad" plus a green army man. This continues Ted's long-running habit of giving those figurines to people, which was originally started by his son Henry.

As Roy clears out, viewers get glimpses of Phoebe’s censored "boob drawing", and his red-string board, which were recurring visual gags from earlier seasons.

The poem Mae recites at the end of the episode is "When Death Comes" by Mary Oliver.
